Homeownership is pivotal to safety, wellbeing, health, and often even access to education. Many AA and NHPI individuals and families are unable to afford homeownership; approximately 40% of Asian Americans and 57% of NHPIs are renters. With around 1 in 10 Asian Americans living 33% below Federal poverty levels, our communities experience some of the greatest gaps in income and home ownership in the United States.
Despite our community’s rapid growth in recent decades, the AA and NHPI homeownership rate is significantly lower than that of non-Hispanic Whites. Moreover, the NHPI homeownership rate mirrors the Black homeownership rate at 43%, the lowest in the country.
NCAPA’s priorities for housing and economic justice focus on addressing and improving the housing and economic justice issues that many AA and NHPIs face.
